DTF Hot Melt Powder (short for Direct-to-Film Hot Melt Adhesive Powder) is a critical component in the DTF printing process, which is a method used to transfer designs onto fabrics, especially textiles like cotton, polyester, and blends.
🔍 What is DTF Hot Melt Powder? It's a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) powder that acts as the adhesive in the DTF printing workflow. After printing a design on a PET film using DTF inks, this powder is applied to the printed area. When heat is applied, the powder melts and bonds the ink to the fabric.
🔧 How It Works (DTF Process Overview):Design Printing:
Print your design on a special PET film using DTF ink (CMYK + white).
Powder Application:
While the ink is still wet, sprinkle the DTF hot melt powder onto the printed film.
Shake off the excess powder.
Curing:
Heat the powder-coated film using a curing oven or heat press (without pressure), typically at 100–160°C (212–320°F) for 2–5 minutes, depending on the powder type.
Heat Transfer:
Place the cured film onto your garment.
Press using a heat press (usually 160–180°C or 320–356°F for 10–15 seconds).
Cold Peel:
Allow the film to cool down before peeling it off.
| Type | Description | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| White powder | Most common. Bonds well to most fabrics. | Cotton, blends |
| Black powder | Designed for dark garments to enhance opacity. | Black/dark fabrics |
| Transparent powder | Offers soft feel; less visible residue. | Light garments, polyester |
| Fine/Medium/Coarse Grades | Refers to granule size; affects feel and bonding. | Depends on fabric texture and desired finish |
Strong adhesion
Soft hand feel
Durable wash resistance
Works on various fabrics
Doesn't require pre-treatment
Good quality DTF powder can withstand 30–50 washes if applied correctly (proper curing and pressing).
📦 Storage Tips:Store in a cool, dry place
Keep away from moisture
Seal tightly after use
